(One-Shot) Review Exchange

Ladies and Gentleman (?), in honour of the ending of my exams for this semester, I proudly present:

The One-Shot Review Exchange

*as shamelessly gacked from fictonalley park.

I tried to explain this in my own terms, and failed, so I shall just steal the post from that particular website:

Here's how it works:
* You offer your fic to the previous (commenter), and in exchange review the story given to you by the next (commenter. In effect, you pick your reviewer.
* One-shots only, of course
* Please point out if you won't read R-rated fics [snip]

So, I will be the 'first poster' who will leave a review to the first person who comments with a link to their one-shot (which can be located on LJ, fanfiction.net, SWG, HASA, etc). Please do not post links to NC-17 stories, as I'm still confused about what LJ's policies on adult content and linking adult content is. (We can always have an adult one-shot exchange at some point in the future... LOL... ack)

Let's say the first commenter is [info]dawn_felagund. She leaves a link to "Paper". I will follow this link and leave a review.

The next person - let's say, [info]heartofoshun, would reply directly to [info]dawn_felagund with a link to one her own one-short stories, e.g. "Full Brothers in Blood". As per the 'rules' of the game, [info]dawn_felagund will leave a review for this particular story by [info]heartofoshun.

And the next player will reply to [info]heartofoshun, carrying on the cascade.

Does this make any sense at all? :S

The point of this exchange, I suppose, is to 1) help other people get feedback, because what author does not like reviews, and 2) get out there, reading fic, and reviewing it. Maybe you'll read something that you don't usually read, and find that you actually like it!

When you do get around to leaving a review - please take the time to leave a comment that is more than just one line (or, eek, one word). It doesn't have to be constructive - but I do ask that you put a bit of thought into it. ;)

That said, please make a note of points of squick, etcetera, in your comments - and please take note of these things when you reply to someone's comment, and be respectful of that. (Please be reasonable and not demanding, however!)

You are allowed to participate more than once, but please allow two more comments between your previous comment and the next one. :) Ideally, you should have comment notifications turned on, so you'll receive comment replies and such.

This will only take off if people participate, so I sincerely hope this isn't too ridiculous an idea. ;) After all, this is the Silmarillion Writers Guild, and feedback is an important part of the writing process, yes? :)

Edit: Clarification on What Construes A One-Shot
Right, I kept telling myself I should do this, and forgot, apologies. (Also, thanks Allie and Alassante for commenting, yay participation :D)

Stories must be more than 750 words long, so no drabbles, I'm afraid. However, a drabble series like Alassante's "Feanorian Fates", where all drabbles follow one clear-cut theme, which can all can be compiled into one document and read straight-through, is okay. If you are submitting a drabble series, it must follow a fixed, specific theme and more importantly, be complete, to stay in the spirit of the 'one-shot' part of this exchange.

Stories within a particular series are okay, too. Allie's "Divine Intervention" is technically a mutli-chaptered fic, but I suppose you could consider a series of sorts, where each 'chapter' can stand alone by itself without needing to read the others - it's a bit iffy though, so if we can just avoid that altogether but linking to individual/particular fics, I would appreciate it much. ([info]allie_meril I will read both chapters/poems? of your fic and consider both in my review, since I just made this clarification. :D)

I have nothing against multi-chaptered stories. But since I had no idea how well received this activity would be, I decided to just go with one-shots for the time being. If everyone could submit their stories appropriately, I would appreciate it! :D And sorry for all the confusion, guys!

Divine Intervention (Valar, freestyle poetry)

Oh, this sounds like an excellent idea, Klose! :)

I'd like to jump-start the muse on this story and continue writing it, so I'll offer up Divine Intervention for a review.

Feanorian Fates

Okay - I orginally replied to Klose so I'll reroute it to you. And THIS time I will change the title *headdeskthud* I'll get it right eventually!

Awesome idea Klose!!!! I'll play along. I have a series of drabbles on SWG that I would love some feedback on: Feanorian Fates. There is no squick potential I don't think and its rated PG13 only for character death.

Did I do this right? Its not a one shot but its only 2400 words for all the drabbles. Is that okay?

Re: Feanorian Fates

Yes, you did do it right :) I do notice that you didn't mention any 'won't-read' squicks... which is okay if you don't have any, but as a general note to everyone, if you want to avoid reading about a particular subject or theme, please do mention in your comment.

Just to get things moving along, I offer up And Then There Was Cake, or Begetting Day Horrors. :)

To the next commenter: no slash or incest please!

Re: Feanorian Fates

Awesome fic! The dry sense of humour is just perfect. I'm going to be sniggering over the 'Ballad of the Throbbing Python of Love' for the rest of the day.

And now, to take the mood in a completely different direction: Red Night. No slash or incest, but there is character death.

Stigmas

I'd like to offer Stigmas - a series of drabbles set around the theme of the seven deadly sins. Each of the drabbles present one of the sins and at the same time an important even in Turin's life. Rating: teens.

To the next commenter: please, no slash.

Re: Stigmas

No slash, aye! My lady, just the First House of Finwe throughout the ages. May I offer The Voices of Silence? Rated Teens, a one shot drabble series of give or take 1100 words. Enjoy! My only squick is horror, so don't scare the crap outta me!

Review: Stigmas

(I'm reviewing here because I don't have a Silwritersguild account, hope that's okay.)

This is a great set of drabbles. I really like the way you've written them in present tense, from Turin's POV, as it feels like we're seeing the events in real-time through his eyes. I'm very impressed at the last drabble - you do a good job of conveying his horror at what his life has become. The world always needs more Turin fic, great work!

Re: Review: Stigmas

Thank you for your kind words :D I'm really happy that you like the series. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Best wishes,
Binka

Review of "Red Night"

I went to read your story at ff.net and because I don't have an account there I decided to post a review here :)

I found your story very beautifully written and very moving. It reminded me of the scene from "The Two Towers" in which Theoden was mourning Theodred and said that no parent should bury their child. You've done a great job capturing such a heart-breaking moment with gentleness and bringing the emotion that is palpable.

So sad, so touching. Very well done!

Re: Review of "Red Night"

Thankyou! I've never written character death before, and I was afraid that it would be too sappy. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Allie - thanks so much for your review. I'm going to reply on SWG but I wanted you to know how much I appreciated your kind words *hugs*

Ok, this sounds fascinating, but I'm still not sure how to join in!

Eep, I'm so sorry - I really am awful at explaining things.

Okay, right - so if you look at the above thread of comments, you'll see that [info]elvenpiratelady has made the latest comment. So, if you want to join in, you'll click on the "Reply to this" link in her comment, and place a link to one of your (non-NC-17) one-shots. [info]elvenpiratelady will leave a review for said one-shot.

The next person, say [info]dawn_felagund will reply to your comment with a link to, e.g. "Salt", and you will have to review that.

So basically,
1) the person who commented immediately before you will give you a review, and
2) the person who comments immediately after you gets a review from you.

Is that less jumbled up than my previous explanations? *g* I might have to edit the post and make it more coherent... I suck. :(

Thank you ma'am, can I have another? lol I'd be willing to read and review another one if someone has not been signed up for.
